The world's only Kids' OPAC with a wink, YakPac can be adapted to work with any Integrated Library System. It was developed both as the kid's interface to a web indexing project, and as the children's OPAC for an ILS. The chat functionality was developed in response to analysis that indicated that kids were more likely to consult with peer groups to find information than use a standard library catalog.
The result is an elegantly simple search interface
that achieves fun and functionality that go well beyond any other
kid's OPAC currently available. It includes a chat environment, that shows what other users were searching at the moment, and highlights interesting search terms in the chat window, plus an ability to maintain private or public, named book shelves, and to write reviews of books or websites.
